Description

Ruins of the Eldena Abbey near Greifswald, Germany. Turned out much gloomier than I planned it to be.

Another critique from ProjectComment.

Overall, this piece has a magical ambiance. I can see that the dark atmosphere it gives off maybe wasn't your first intention. I've got a feeling that you started with a dark gray, blue or maybe even purple as your base color. It is possible that if you really did not want it to give a dreary and foreboding vibe, you will have wanted to start with a light color. Now, I don't know what these ruins exactly look in real life, but I can say if one wants to plan a piece without sketching thumbnails, it is best to put a light and transparent color as a base layer. For this, I would suggest a gray to the point where it is nearly white so you would be able to add more depth on top.

Though, I do very much enjoy the sky and background. It adds to the complete piece and makes the ruins seem like it was really part of a photograph. I enjoy how easy flow watercolor mixes to create such mesmerizing pieces. The color scheme pattern for the sky is odd, which gives it an original touch. This piece does have a tendency to not show where there is a light source, thus placing your shadowing a little oddly. It seems like in this composition that the light is coming from the moon (from it being dark, that is the vibe I get of the light source) in the sky from the back of the painting where it is unseen.

This piece is very beautiful and is drawn more skillfully than I could ever do, I hope you will keep up the good work.
